Deconstruct Reconstruct
This mixed media piece aims to create an inorganic structure out of organic shapes. The process began with charcoal studies of Sucker Brook, a nestled brook that lies in a forest behind my school. After completing multiple studies of the brook from sight, I “deconstructed” one of my pieces by cutting it up. After experimenting with different layouts, I then “reconstructed” it by gluing it together. From there, I experimented with acrylic paint and charcoal to create a new environment. Through layered applications of charcoal, I built texture and atmosphere; this evoked a gradual erosion. I also used intersecting lines and variations in value to guide the viewer’s eye across the composition. By blending abstraction with hints of organic forms, the piece creates a new atmosphere.
